est: - Afanasi Pood (Yevgeni Fainzilber)Russian, b. 1951 Yevgeni Fainzilber chose his nom de plume or signature name; Afanasi Pood, in orer to disguise his Jewish heritage. Even today Yevgeni would have difficulty marketing his product in parts of Eastern Europe under his own name. Afanasi was born on July 23rd 1951 in Leningrad. His father was a military man, so the whole family lived in Kalinograd (formerly Kenigsberg). In 1958 the family moved to Leningrad after his father's retirement. In 1968 Afanasi graduated form School No. 239 which specialized in mathematics. From the time Afanasi was in the 7th grade, he participated in and won the City Mathematical Contest every year and was subsequently awarded a silver medal on graduation. Immediately following Afanasi enrolled in the Faculty of Physics and Mechanics of the Polytechnical Institute of Leningrad. For the most part, up to this point in his life, the study of art was mostly a hobby; however, in 1972 Afanasi started drawing more seriously. His first works were mostly pencil sketches or oil portraits of friends. In 1973 Afanasi graduated from the Institute and went to work for The Scientific Research Institute of Leningrad. While working at the Research Institute Afanasi successfully defended a dissertation for a Ph.D. Over the next few years he received several certificates for original inventions as well as earning the HONOURED inventor of the USSR award. During these years he also attended at the Leningrad Academy of Painting and Sculpture where he studied under the highly respected professor Victor I. Suverov. The secret Avantgardist' Exhibitions of 1974/75 greatly influenced Afanasi. Boris Rabinovich, tutored and influenced Afanasi such that in 1983 he joined the illegal Association of Experimental Art. The EAA, as it is known, is a collective of avant-garde artists devoted to pursuing a post-modern direction originally started, in their country, by such visionaries as Chagall and Kandinsky. Because this organization was devoted to and expressed a need for freedom of expression they found themselves diametrically opposed to the government sponsored USSR Artists Union. There were severe repercussions for those who did not follow the guidelines set out in the government definition of "Social Realism". Like the famous Ely Bielutin before him, Afanasi's paintings were removed from shows and confiscated. He lost his job with the Scientific Research Institute and was brought before officials of the KGB where he was interigated many times. He was forced to submit written explanations of his activities and forbidden any public venue for his artistic talent. Only the collapse of the Soviet System in 1991 saved Afanasi from being arrested and confined as a dissident. An examination of this remarkable character serves to illuminate a wonderful dichotomy embodied in the mind of this man. His primary background training demands a rigorous adherence to physical and mechanical laws; which, for most of us precludes the ability to dream or as Stephen Hawking has said: "?to soar through the universe unencumbered". Afanasi has said: "The creating of a picture (art) must not and cannot be limited by any condition or rule". For Afanasi the creative process converts energy into images that live on the canvas without time and outside the normal parameters of space. He sees himself, much as Einstein has been described, as a mystic; who has ability to view the universe in its unfolding and convert those images, not just through the plastic art of mathematics, but also, Afanasi's creations, they will discover that the results of his efforts; as "receiver and transmitter [of the universe]", produce a creation which is not only different for each individual who experiences it, but different every single time an individual comes to it. Afanasi Pood lives in St. Petersburg. He is unable, because of the assignment of a Level 1 Security Rating, to travel abroad. He is married an has a son who is a student at the Aerospace Academy. His son is also a gifted artist. Nina Kuzminskaya says of Pood's art:"Actually, Pood cannot be called a primitivist. He is well-acquainted with classical art as well as with modern art, whose influence is sometimes felt in his works. Looking at some Pood's pictures evokes the recollection of French and German expressionists. But Pood's works are not a senseless compilation of artistic devices, on the contrary, they are created in a specific style which is characteristic of this particular author, who can be easily recognized at once due to his style. Pood's works are exquisite, light, having powerful inner energy. Everything mentioned above proves that Afanasi Pood is a gifted mature artist with a great artistic potential.
