A Collection Of Ships In Various Ports

four etchings on fine laid paper, some watermarked "Arches France" or "BFK Rives", , c. 1922-30, signed "E. Stetson Crawford" in pencil lower right, from various small editions, all extensively annotated in a small hand in pencil apparently by the artist, As printed printed by Rigal, Paris for some

  • State:
  • Condition:The plate areas very fine with only some curling at the bottom margins, upper corner crease on one well away from the image.
  • Sheet:
  • Plate: 6 by 9 1/2 in. (15 x 22 cm.) and smaller
  • Framing: Sold unframed
  • Note: Apparently from the artist's studio or estate. Many of the works of this era reflect Whistler's style and feel. Apparently he for a time used Whistler's Paris printers as well.

Earl Stetson Crawford was born into a prominent Philadelphia family, the grandson of hat-maker, John B. Stetson. At the turn of the 19th century, after studying at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts*, he joined a stream of aspiring American artists heading to Paris and enrolled in the newly-opened Academie Carmen* of early modernist James McNeill Whistler. The eccentric Whistler thought enough of Crawford's abilities to appoint him "monitor" of his art class, and "when critiquing the work of other students, Whistler would borrow Crawford's palette because he said it made him 'feel at home' " (Merrill, 166) The artist eventually returned to settle in California and died in 1965 in Pasadena which may explain why these works were found in a California collection. The works were very well cared for by the artist but have had some handling mishaps since the artist had them in his studio.
