"Tambien Esto", Plate 43 From The "Desastres De La Guerra (Disasters Of War)"

Etching, burnished aquatint, a strong rich impression with substantial burr and aquatint, , 1810-1820 printed later, , from the first edition printed on soft laid paper, with sewn holes left edge, ,

  • Condition:In very good condition, the sheet with sewn holes still showing left margin.
  • Sheet: 9 13/16 by 13 3/8 in. (250 by 340 mm)
  • Plate: 6 1/8 by 8 3/16 in. (154 x 208 mm.)
  • References: Recorded and illustrated in the standard text on Goya's original etchings by Harris, No. 163iii; Delteil 162.
  • Framing: Sold unframed
  • Note: Note: Desastres de la Guerra (Disasters of War) was one of four sets of prints illustrating the horrors of war then raging in Europe and the follies of 18th century Spain with its religious, social and political upheavals. The Los Proverbios series used ridicule, extravagance and fantasy to display the errors and vices of contemporary Spain. Desastres de la Guerra was not published during the artist's lifetime due to the controversial subject matter in the era of the inquisition. The name by which the series is known today is not Goya's own. His handwritten title on an album of proofs given to a friend reads: "Fatal consequences of Spain's bloody war with Bonaparte, and other emphatic caprices (Spanish: Fatales consequencias de la sangrienta guerra en España con Buonaparte, Y otros caprichos enfáticos)"(source: Wikipedia).

This a well printed plate from an early edition with the lines clear and distinct. The aquatint is strong and evenly printed. The title and number clear and sharp.
