apparently from an 18th century P.F.Basan edition on better quality antique laid paper,
- State: A slightly worn impression of the third state of five (Nowell-Usticke) showing the added diagonal lines upper right edge and the pointed corner attributed to the Watelet retouch generally associated with the first of the Basan editions (P.F.Basan). This example shows minimal retouching from the earliest impressions.
- Condition: In good condition, trimmed just inside the plate line.
- Plate: 3 1/2 by 4 1/2 in. (8.8 x 11.3 cm.)

- Note: Certain biblical stories presented an opportunity for artist's to indulge in slightly risque imagery allowing the artist to show off their skill in presenting the human, usually female, nude.
Rembrandt worked on his first etchings (1626) in Leiden soon after leaving the studios of his teachers and his eventual international fame would rely on the widespread dissemination of these works. Diverging from his contemporaries, Rembrandt endowed his etchings with a painterly quality achieved through suggestive handling of light and dark. Rembrandt's etchings are necessarily creative endeavors unique in their own aesthetic which devoid of color, unlike his paintings, depended on blacks and whites to create the dynamic statements and scenic tensions that have fascinated viewers over hundreds of years.
