"Flowers" (An Impressionist Floral Still Life)

Oil on masonite panel, Not signed, , , , , 20 X 20 Inches, , , In excellent condition,Sold unframed, This is a wonderful impressionist painting, that comes to us without name or provenance, purchased from an estate in North Carolina. The color is vivid and every stroke of pigment has purpose... great economy of technique. The material (masonite) places this work most assuredly as an American work. There is a particularly striking play of complementary colors (for instance, greens against reds) that give this work a great vibrancy.

AMERICAN,SCHOOL, POSSIBLY BY JAMES EVERETT STUART

date: 19th Century
ref:
american

est: 6000-8000

"Valley of the Yosemite"

Oil on canvas, Not signed., , , , , 30 X 46 Inches, , , The painting is in excellent condition, relined, with very minor inpainting (certainly less than 1% of the painting surface)., Framed in a fine period frame., This painting was formerly attributed to Thomas Moran: on the back of the stretcher is attached a scrap of paper with notation "The Valley of the Yosemite... Vale No. 1... by Thomas Moran 1874". The painting was shown to Stephen Good, Denver, Colorado, authority on Thomas Moran, who has concluded that this work is definitely not by the Moran.

Subsequently, research has revealed that the this painting is possibly by James Everett Stuart, substantiated by the following comparative characteristics:

1. Stuart was a California painter, and painted the Yosemite area frequently. The subject painting compares favorably with others of the area painted by the artist.

2. The present painting is painted in the signature style of Stuart, a broad soft style for the bulk of the middleground and background, with little attention paid to detail. Clouds are loosely defined, as are areas of water and distant land masses. Arial perspective is accomplished by a steady lightening and greying of the basic foreground and middleground colors.

3. As in the present painting, Stuart tends to round his forms, especially in the mountains and land masses, softly defining them rather than angularly. Distant land masses are seldom defined with accuracy or detail, other than general appearance.

4. The palette of the the subject painting follows that of the artist, using colors that tend toward grey, with minor or greyed reds and greens in the foreground. Furthermore, pigments are thickly applied, especially in the foreground details, and a vigorously textured support ground is revealed even through the areas of thicker application.

5. The horzontal proportion of approximately 1:1.5 is a favorite format for Stuart's compositions, as is the subject painting.

6. A comparative study with images of the subject painting and a painting recently offered through Aspire Auctions, Cleveland, Ohio clearly reveals many technical, compositional and artistic vision similarities. The comparative painting is well documented as by the hand of JE Stuart and could possibly be the field study for the completion of the subject painting, executed in the artist's studio.

In any case, this painting is a major work, of fine quality and fitting for any serious collector.

However, the subject and location are frequent locations for the artist, and the minor cracqeleur throughout the painting indicates that this work can safely be dated no later than the mid 1950's... a time frame early on in the career of Richard Schmid.

"Girl with Birds"

Oil on canvas, Not signed., , , , , 30 X 25 Inches, , , The painting is in good condition, in need of cleaning., Framed in a fine carved and gold leafed frame., This wonderful painting, set in the interior of a work room or barn (judging from the tools found around the girl), is a most pleasant and dramatic painting. We judge this work to be of Italian origin, because of the Tyrolian dress of the girl and the use of chiroscuro... the dramatic theatrical light effects, first used by the Italian artists.

The girl is very comfortably posed, obviously absorbed in her task of caring for the birds that have gathered in numbers all around her. Hidden in the rafters are more birds, escaping to the shadows. It is fitting that the birds are doves, only adding to the sense of peace and tranquility of this fine painting.

"Shepherd and Dog Watching their Flock"

Oil on panel, Signed lower right corner., , , , From a Mid-American collector, now deceased, through the family to the current owner., 6.5 X 9.8 Inches, , , Slight surface mark around the head of the dark sheep. Under blacklight, shows minor inpainting, certainly less than one or two percent of the total surface, and mostly along the edges or where framing has left a mark... inpainting is not detectable except by blacklight., Framed in a very fine burl walnut frame, in excellent condition. Please see our images., This is the finest work we have ever seen by the artist, Cornelius van Leemputten. The sure hand and comfident handling of both subject and form place the figures in harmony with each other and their environment... an exceptional painting from a major Dutch animal painter.

From a major Mid-America collection 19th century Dutch and Belgian animal paintings, mostly of barnyard animals, sheep, goats and chickens. All the paintings are on beveled wood panel, usually mohogany.

"Two Flowers"

Encaustic, acrylic on canvas, Signed in pencil, Perfect condition, , , , 24 x 36 inch., , , Perfect condition, Stretched, Encaustic is a beeswax-based paint mixed with pigment and kept molten while painting. The word encaustic comes from the Greek meaning to "burn in" which refers to the process of fusing the paint. This type of painting was used in the 5th century B.C. for weathering boats and coloring marble. Encaustic is the most durable of the artist's paints because the beeswax is impervious to moisture. As a result, it will not deteriorate, yellow or darken and it can be polished to a high gloss for a brilliant surface. The beauty and the difficultly in the paint is found in its immediate drying time. Because it cools immediately, the gesture and brush strokes are captured. "Encaustic" was first made popular in the contemporary art world.

"Covered Bridge, Old Lyme, Connecticut"

Oil on fiberboard panel, Signed with the initials "ER", lower center, , , , , 16 X 20 Inches, , , The painting is in excellent condition, Framed in simple modern frame, in good condition, This painting is clearly identified as an Old Lyme painting on the back, with the notation, "The Bridge - Old Lyme" and additionally signed with the initials "ER" again on the back. These notations were made by the artist, and establish this work as from the traditional school of Old Lyme, Connecticut. The attribution for the painting could be Edward Rook, a popular Old Lyme artist. The style of the painting is typical of the impressionist technique of Rook, but we have no documentation to establish him definitively as the artist.

"Machine Cubiste" from "Du Cubism", the first critical study of the cubist movement, with etchings Picasso, Metzinger, Gleizes, Laurencin, Duchamp and Villon, and 'd'apres by G. Braque, Derain, Leger and Gris,

dry point etching,, ,numbered 240/435, from the edition printed in 1947,,as published Campagnie Francaise des Arts Graphiques, Paris, , , ,(sheet) 10 1/16 x 8 1/4 in (25.5 x 21 cm) ,(plate-image) 7 x 5 1/4 in. (11.7 x 13.5 cm.),Generally very good conditions except for discoloration on the paper where previously exposed to mat and tape hinges verso, full margins. Text verso.,Sold unframed,"In August 1912 Eugene Figuiere et Cie. published the first critical study of an artistic movement that was so new that the name -Du "cubisme"- was still printed in quotation marks. The authors of the book were the painters Albert Gleizes and Jean Metzinger...In 1947, however, the reputation of the book was undisputed and the Compagnie Francaise de Arts Graphiques undertook to publish a new edition....with a preface by Gleizes...and appendix by Metzinger. (Cramer, "Pablo Picasso, The Illustrated Books" pg. 128). This edition of 1947 added 7 very early engravings by the artists mentioned above. Thus this work from 1907 by Picabia, as well as the other etchings by these artists, may be considered examples of the earliest cubist engravings.
