(Face) thick impasto style oil on very heavy linen, mounted on board., c 1930, No signature seen, however the back has never been examined as it is firmly attached to the old piece of plywood.,
,
- Condition:In generally good condition with some minor flaking at the edges where sometime covered with strip of narrow wood (see photos). Colors slightly dulled from time and age. Evidence of being folded horizonally at one time, probably for easy transport. One corner detached from backing. This work has never been completely demounted as the glue is very strong.
- Size: 18 1/2 by 20 in. ( 45 x 50 cm.)
- Provenance: From a Sarasota estate c. 1985, owner apparently was named Gaskins.
- Framing: Sold unframed
- Note: This work appears to be a fragment from a larger painting. Perhaps a WWII souvenir. The last owner had it mounted on a heavy piece of plywood that looks to be about 50-80 years old. 4 thin strips of painted wood were originally on the edge of the front as a crude frame. The quality of the painting is very high while the framing and mount is very crude.
Alexej Georgewitsch von Jawlensky was a Russian expressionist painter active in Germany. He was a key member of the New Munich Artist's Association, Der Blaue Reiter group and later the Die Blaue Vier.
