"Tonto E Mas (All This And More )", Plate 22 From The "Desastres De La Guerra (Disasters Of War)"

etching and burnished aquatint, a strong richly inked impression with minimal wear in the lines, but the aquatint is mostly worn away, the title slightly faint, the number faint, 1810-1820 printed later , with "Goya 1810" engraved in the plate , from an early edition on fine laid paper,

  • Condition:In very good condition, few annotations in the margin at the bottom well away from the image, remains of hinges verso.
  • Sheet: 9 1/4 × 12 1/4. (231 × 300 mm)
  • Plate: 6 5/16 by 9 15/16 in. (16 × 25.2 cm)
  • References: Recorded and illustrated in the standard text on Goya's original etchings by Harris, No. 142, Delteil 141.
  • Framing: Sold unframed
  • Note: Desastres de la Guerra (Disasters of War) was one of four sets of prints illustrating the horrors of war then raging in Europe and the follies of 18th century Spain with its religious, social and political upheavals. Desastres de la Guerra was not published during the artist's lifetime due to the controversial subject matter in the era of the inquisition. The name by which the series is known today is not Goya's own. His handwritten title on an album of proofs given to a friend reads: "Fatal consequences of Spain's bloody war with Bonaparte, and other emphatic caprices (Spanish: Fatales consequencias de la sangrienta guerra en España con Buonaparte, Y otros caprichos enfáticos)"(source: Wikipedia).

This a well printed plate from an early edition with the lines clear and distinct. However the aquatint mostly gone. The title and number weak.
