    "Edge Of Town"

    lithograph, on wove GCM watermarked paper, 1938, signed in pencil by the artist, from the recorded edition of 250, As printed and published by Associated American Artists, New York, with margins.

  • Condition:In very good condition, with full margins, discoloration from exposure near image, annotations at the bottom, healable tear upper right margin well away from the image, hinge remains top margin.
  • Sheet: 11 5/8 x 13 7/8in (29.5 x 35.2cm)
  • Plate: 8 7/8 x 10 3/4in (22.5 x 27.3cm)
  • References: Recorded and illustrated in the standard text on Benton's lithographs by Fath, No. 22.
  • Framing: Matted in accordance with accepted conservation standards, acid free mats and mounts, removable hinging.
  • Note: The train with its motion and robust machinery was used as a metaphor by many artists for the early 20th century changes in populations as people moved from rural areas to the industrializing cities. Benton recalled that "Engines were the most impressive things that came into my childhood". Benton was particularly in awe of the steam powered trains with their powerful driving wheels. Works depicting steam trains are among his most admired.
