    "Maunders Fish Shop, Chelsea"

transfer lithograph on ivory colored fine laid paper, , 1890, with a pencil butterfly lower left, also with the butterfly in the stone center , ,

  • Condition:The full sheet apparently, with small hinges remains top edge, with some mat discoloartion where the frame opening rested on the sheet. Overall in generally good condition.
  • References: Recorded in the standard texts on the original lithographs of Whistler by Way no. 28, Levy 42, Stratis, Spink and Tedeschi no. 37.
  • Provenance: From the artist's estate originally, as it has the Birn Phillips rust red stamp verso (see notes beslow).
  • Framing: offered unframed
  • Note: When first transferred and proved, the letters in “maunder” were blurred and difficult to read. In the second state, the letters were tidied up. According to T. R. Way’s 1905 catalogue, twenty-eight proofs were then pulled from the original stone. However, this count is too low, as there were thirty-one impressions, both signed and unsigned, in the artist’s estate in 1903.(Way 28).

The estate copies were managed by Ms. Birn Phillips, Whistlers's assistant and sister-in-law. She stamped the lifetime printings with a square stamp, as here, and the postumouse printings with a circle stamp.
