- Note:From the Vollard edition of 1920 printed in a black ink and which was limited to 25 according to Venturi.
The work on this edition was started around 1914 with an intended edition of 125 but interrupted by the war. Approximately 100 were printed in grey on laid paper.Vollard requested a printing in black after the war from the printer, as here, to complete the edition. The Vollard printing was only 25 and intended to complete the edition of 125 started before the war. None were signed.
Cezanne did a number of self-portraits in oil, drawing and water color as well as this print. Most favored this right profile. This monochrome version is especially helpful in conveying the intensity of the artist with his prominent bulging eyes noted by many observers.
